“Schwab's characters feel vital and real, never reduced to simple archetypes... In a genre that tends toward the flippant or pretentious, this is a rare superhero novel as epic and gripping as any classic comic. Schwab's tale of betrayal, self-hatred, and survival will resonate with superhero fans as well as readers who have never heard of Charles Xavier or Victor von Doom.” Publishers Weekly, starred review

Not your typical extraordinary ability conquers all story arc. Much like Vicious this story focuses on complex, compelling and challenged characters. Schwab tells another tale of nuance, of regret and success, while leaving you attached and curious. You will not be disappointed!
HOLY WOW THIS BOOK WAS GOOD. I’m not joking – I WAS HOOKED, in a way that I haven’t been in a LONG time! I remember seeing this image of V. E. Schwab with her notes on the floor, re-plotting Vengeful and, when I read it, I could see the work that went into making this masterpiece the best it could be. With the exception of the ending, I wouldn’t have changed a THING about this book, but even then, I’ll give it five glowing stars because THAT WAS A GREAT READ. THINGS I LOVED: 1. THE STRUCTURE: From past to present, varying between character and character, the structure – and the mystery that that structure brought – was what brought Vengeful to life. Everything about this book was darker and twist-ier than Vicious as the fight wasn’t just Eli V Victor anymore, but with other equally powerful EOs, government agencies and slightly deranged scientists now in the mix. It was shocking and heart-wrenching and if you loved even a moment of Vicious, you’ll ADORE Vengeful. 2. VICTOR: I REALLY loved how Victor’s story progressed in this book. It was juicier and darker, because he was fighting for his own survival and OH WOW I LOVED IT. 3. THE FINAL BATTLE: I loved the culmination battle of Marcella VS Victor VS Eli VS the task force and all the power and the twists. I wish the CONCLUDING scene with Victor was a little more fleshed out, but I enjoyed it all regardless. MY VERDICT: Get your hands on this series NOW. Vicious and Vengeful are absolutely, deliciously mind-blowing, dark and twisty and everything you would expect from a book about villains!
Ah, Vengeful. The long-awaited sequel to Vicious. In some ways, I'm satisfied. In others, disappointed. Though it did not blow my mind, it was worth the wait. The last hundred pages or so is where the story really kicks into high gear, but it's over before you know it. I loved all of the characters (old and new) and Schwab really expands on the concept of EOs in this book. I felt like I was watching a slow-burn Marvel movie the entire time. I did find the frequent time jumps between past and present jarring, and it took a while to settle into the strange rhythm. Also, I'm not a fan of the repetitive writing style. I don't need to know that Syd slowed, stopped, halted. It was annoying, irritating, irksome. The pacing was on the lagging end for my taste, but Schwab really did meticulously work her way up to tying everything together for the grand finale.
This was one of my most anticipated books of the year! V.E. Schwab is hands down my favorite author. Everything she writes is uniquely magic and this book is no exception. Without going too much into the plot I'll say there are new characters that fit seamlessly into the story and characters from the previous book Vicious, that we get to learn more about. This book made me laugh and cry and curse Victoria's name just a little bit which is when you know it's a really excellent book. All of the feelings, truly. I stayed up all night after the book was released to finish it because I couldn't put it down. It's a must read, I can't wait to loan out my copy to anyone else I can share the story with.
I little over 5 years ago I read a short preview of Vicious via Netgalley and immediately knew I would love this book. Forward to October 2013 and I ended up having a new favorite book, my ONE favorite book. Five years later, I read the sequel and I'm just a whole big mess of emotions. I expected Vengeful to be GOOD, how could it not be, when I get to return to my favorite character, Victor Vale, when I get to read more about my precious family of broken souls, my personal heroes, when I get to return to a city filled with people of questionable mindsets, when I get to go back to a place that makes me feel like coming home. Vengeful wasn't just good though. It was MORE. SO MUCH MORE. The plot was insanely good, had me on the edge of my seat and unable to stop reading (I did read the whole book in one sitting minus a small break to get something to eat), the characters were just as fully fleshed out and perfectly broken and HUMAN, just like they were in Vicious but with so much additional character growth, making it all the more twisted, more messed up, DARKER, and just... MORE. The new characters made it all the more interesting, certain developments made it all the more intense, stakes were higher, characters' morals more messed up... I could say so much more about it yet at the same time I don't know what to say. Not that I ever had any doubts, but that the sequel to my favorite book turned out THIS good, easily became a favorite itself, brings (happy) tears to my eyes, tbh.
