Turner Classic Movies presents a bucket list of the best and most beloved holiday films of all time, complete with spirited commentary, behind-the-scenes stories, and photos spanning eight decades of Christmastime favorites.
Nothing brings the spirit of the season into our hearts quite like a great holiday movie. "Christmas films" come in many shapes and sizes and exist across many genres. Some, like It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story, are perennials, while others, such as Die Hard, have only gradually become yuletide favorites. But they all have one thing in common: they use themes evoked by the holiday period - nostalgia, joy, togetherness, dysfunction, commercialism, or cynicism - as a force in their storytelling.

Turner Classic Movies: Christmas in the Movies showcases the very best among this uniquely spirited strain of cinema. Each film is profiled on what makes it a "Christmas movie," along with behind-the-scenes stories of its production, reception, and legacy. Complemented by a trove of color and black-and-white photos, Turner Classic Movies: Christmas in the Movies is a glorious salute to a collection of the most treasured films of all time.
Among the 30 films included: The Shop Around the Corner, Holiday Inn, Meet Me in St. Louis, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Little Women, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

"Christmas in the Movies" is an ideal holiday gift and the perfect Christmas movie companion! I've purchased several copies for the movie lovers in my life (family and business colleagues) as well as for myself. Jeremy Arnold covers the favorites from IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE to DIE HARD and ELF) as well as introduces readers to holiday movies they may not be aware of, but should. I recently watched the Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh-starrer HOLIDAY AFFAIR on TCM based on the book's recommendation and it was warm, wonderful, and perfect for watching next to a lit Christmas tree. The book provides insights and beautiful photographs - it's a good one to pull out and put on the coffee table along the holiday ornamentation.

I imagine many people have their favorite Christmas movie in mind, something they watch every year - or, like me, they have a stack of DVDs they try to work through every holiday season. People tend to feel very strongly about their Christmas movies, because they are often tied to important memories. Jeremy Arnold's book has wonderfully encapsulated everything we love about Christmas in the movies - the nostalgia, the spectacle, the music, the apt warnings about never feeding weird new pets after midnight...and can't everyone relate to that? I would have loved to see a couple of my favorites - "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and the more recent "Arthur Christmas" highlighted (although the Muppets do get a nice shout out in the entry on "Scrooge") - but I was delighted to learn about some holiday films that had previously escaped my notice, movies like "Trail of Robin Hood" and "Beyond Tomorrow." I was lucky enough to catch "Holiday Affair" on TCM the other night because of this book, and it was darling! I'm definitely going to add it to my annual marathon of Christmas offerings. This is a lovely book, and an ideal present for any movie lover. It's sure to be pored over at Christmas time for years to come!

I am a Christmas nut. I absolutely love Christmas and one of the ways in which a person can tell I love Christmas is that I own over 100 Christmas movies. I have long collected them, from old classics to new releases, from children’s to sing-a-longs, so I am always on the lookout for more. This book pulls together a list of 30 movies that Jeremy Arnold deems classic and thus worthy of watching them every year. The book is very fun with photos and trivia on each movie. He also states why he chose it in a section on each movie about the Christmas Moment in the movie. A great gift and a very fun read!
