Long years ago there lived a king and a queen who had no children. They were unhappy until a daughter was born to them. Then they gave a feast to celebrate the baby’s birth. To this feast they invited twelve of their favorite fairies. Each one of the twelve who came had a gift for the pretty baby princess. The first fairy’s gift was a promise of great beauty. The second fairy promised the child goodness. The third fairy promised her riches. Each one added something new until the baby princess had been promised everything a child could desire. Finally all but one of the twelve fairies had announced their gifts. As the last one stood up to speak, in walked another guest. She was a wicked fairy who had not been invited to the feast to celebrate the baby’s birth. She was very angry. “Now hear me,” she said. “On the day the princess is fifteen years of age, she will stick her finger on a spinning wheel. And she will die!” Then the fairy disappeared.
