An uplifting and stylish score by Thomas Newman for one of the best movies of the '90s --though a certifiable flop when first released. Newman's music strikes a perfect balance between character introspection -- with its uneasy use of synthesizers and wandering themes -- and genuine emotion, as evidenced by the film's triumphant conclusion. Newman makes use of classical themes from Mozart alongside his original music. Both the nobility of the film's protagonists and the time and place of the narrative are captured through the imaginative use of period songs by the Inkspots and Hank Williams.

The actors are amazing, the soundtrack is amazing! One of my favorite movies ever!My only complaint with the soundtrack is that the song at the very beginning when Dufresne is in front of the house drunk is not on the disc. Wish it had been! But a good CD overall.

Movie based on the short story '' Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption '' truly a wonderful score. Reminiscent of '' Witness '' as far as the cello work, it can be quite dark and spiritual at times. It's catchy, if you can say that about orchestration, and leads a person in further to what it would be like to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Ink Spots open the soundtrack and we also hear Hank Williiams, but as suggested in the movie one of the prized finds here is the opera piece '' the Marriage of Figaro ''. Thomas Newman brings you out of the doom in the last score entitled '' End Title ''.
