His idea of permanence is the VW van that takes him from one gig to the next . . .

Owen Lawry has made a living as a traveling musician and enjoys his footloose and fancy free lifestyle. But since meeting Laura McCarthy and helping her land a job at his grandparents’ hotel on Gansett Island, Owen has decided there’s something to be said for a roof over his head—and a warm, sexy woman in his bed.

Laura, a newlywed who discovered that her husband never quit dating, came to Gansett for her cousin’s wedding. She didn’t plan to stay—until she met Owen, and took on the renovations at the dilapidated Sand & Surf Hotel. Owen and Laura's attraction simmers over the coming months—but as they take baby steps toward love, their growing bond is tested when Laura’s estranged husband refuses to grant her a divorce. As summer turns to autumn, will they find a way to keep the fire burning in their hearts, even as a chill fills the air? . . .

Another in her Gansett Island series, the characters draw you in with lots of crossed story lines, but ultimately unsatisfying because it lacks the scenic detail elements of the initial stories, too much is left unresolved, and the main storyline ends abruptly with a rushed Epilogue ending. This one needed a lot more editing to focus on developing characters, settings, conflicts and relationships for those who haven't read earlier books in the series. Instead, we are dropped in the middle of too many stories at once. This is supposed to be mostly Laura and Owen's story, but details of that relationship are left out while multiple secondary characters become the focus. Joe and Janey are away from the island so she can attend vet school, and dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, but family and grandparents are ecstatic. Sydney and Luke get engaged, and Sydney is reaching out to the newly hired lighthouse caretaker, who lost her fiance in 9/11. But themes of dealing with life after loss are brushed over lightly here. Joe's mom Caroline, widowed at an early age, has decided to winter on the island, and has an incredible one nighter with the sexy 38 year old Irishman who's filling in for Joe as ferry captain, and also 18 years younger than her. Stephanie gets engaged to her screenwriter. Ned the millionaire taxi driver is making plans to fund a recording studio for Evan, who is still waiting for his Nashville demo to be released but dreading the thought of touring. Dan has succeeded in getting Charlie released, wants to spend time on the island writing, has a trial in LA, but is intrigued by Kara, who's come to the island to start a new branch of the family boating business. And Maddie is excited to resume sex with her husband after giving birth to their daughter, and making plans for a Thanksgiving feast and affordable housing projects for seasonal employees who winter over. Linda flits about as a secondary character in this, instead of the controlling hotel matriarch she's portrayed as in the first book. And Maddie's sister Tiffany has the hots for sheriff Blaine after one hot makeout session, and his command to come to hime as soon as her divorce is final. Meanwhile, our heroine Laura has left Justin, had a rough early pregnancy, and is working at refurbishing the Victorian Sand and Surf with Owen's support, but is afraid he doesn't want to give up his vagabond troubador lifestyle. Her ex husband, Justin, won't concede to a divorce (no no-fault divorce in this state) or reasonable custody arrangements for the baby he doesn't really want unless Laura gives up Owen. Owen and Laura acknowledge their connection, declaring love for each other, and finally having amazing sex. But Owen's mom has finally left her abusive military husband, so he's forced to reveal his nightmare childhood. Then more sex, but quietlyon the floor in front of the fireplace, because his mom is sleeping in the next room. Puhleeze! While I applaud the effort to take on serious topics like domestic violence, unplanned pregnancy, divorce, and death of a loved one, there are just too many characters and story lines in play, fun dialogue always turns into someone's hot sex scene, and too much is left unresolved. This one needed better focus and editing.

I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series and hope for more. I like that there is a main story line that manages to keep us in touch with the characters in her other books. After reading the first couple of books, you are familiar with all the characters and feel like you know them. This is light entertainment and I would recommend all the books in the series to anyone who enjoys a fun read.

No story. Just sex. Very disappointed.

I gave up at page 190 - I was heartily tired of having to skip pages and pages of sex scenes. Every thing between the sex scenes was leading up to another sex scene. Enough already-I give up.

I really liked this book, but way too many characters to keep straight. It takes a whole paragraph to name them, otherwise I would give 4.5 stars. GJRA

It was hard to get into at first but after sticking with it i enjoyed it. I think it woukd have been better if i had started earlier in the series. There were so many characters with history that i had no clue about. While it was said to be a stand alone book it would be better to start at the beginning.

I enjoyed this book - and I will read more of her books - could definitely have done without so much in the sex area, but some may enjoy it - would have been a good story without it!

This is a good read. It has romance, life situations, resolutions and happy endings. I will be reading other McCarthys of Gansett Island books.

I really liked this book, which is the second in the series that I have read, but there were so many characters with their own side stories that it detracted from the Owen/Laura story. Also, bringing back characters from previous books is great, as long as I don't have to read the ongoing details of how much they are in love. Suffice it to say, a couple of pages of update on Mac and Maddie would have been enough for me. Still Owen and Laura both had interesting back stories and I liked how the author rolled them out slowly, so I could understand who they were.

Just some inane words between sex scenes.

This is the third book of the series I have read and it stands alone well. The main characters have histories which impact their relationships in ways both obvious and subtle. Family and friends lend support to an engaging, sexy love story.

STOP!! If you haven't read the previous 5 books in this series please go back and read books 1 - 5... I am an avid reader and this is one of the best series I have ever read... Ms. Force is a wizard at weaving characters and story lines in this fun, easy reading and captivating series... The stories are set on an island patterned after Blcok Island off the coast of Massachusetts... The tales involve the natives, kids who leave and come home, vacationers who come back drawn by the sense of community and lots of LOVE... I hope this series never ends... Ms. Force has a way of carrying her characters forward which adds so much to the series... The McCarthy brothers are hot, hot, hot and to add to the mix you get a cousin, and other extended family... It should be cumberson reading about all of them but their characters are so vivid you won't have any trouble at all. Enjoy this Series - It's Great!!!
