Play with Fire, the debut book by popular speaker and teacher Bianca Juarez Olthoff, is the reminder that God isn’t waiting until you have more resources or a spouse or a job so he can use you. He’s ready to use you now.
Using the mythical creature, the Phoenix, which was also referenced by early church leaders, she parallels this story with God’s work in her own life, highlighting the beauty of reinvention with fire as both the impetus and the method for change. Olthoff reminds us that we serve a God who is redemptive and can take the worst situations and use them for His glory.
Play With Fire is a bible-infused message that will help women discover:
- The way out of the middle is moving forward
- The personal and powerful nature of the Holy Spirit
- The power and sacrifice of transformation
- The unique calling and purpose of life involves transformation
With Olthoff’s distinct style, strong storytelling gifts, and powerful bible teaching, Play with Fire will remind readers that God has huge dreams for them. In Bianca’s words, “He’s whispering in the wind and speaking through the fire and shouting in silence the extraordinary dream He is birthing in you. His dream for you is far greater than the dream you have for yourself. It’s not your identity or income or influence that will make this happen. Like Zechariah 4:6 says, “’It’s not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord.” It’s time to play with fire.

Bianca's vulnerability and faith is displayed perfectly in her writing. The Holy Spirit meets us where we are. Amazing book!
If you've ever faced a desert place in your life, or a fire that seems meant to destroy you, or you're just feeling stuck in a rut of mundane knowing that you worship a God who is anything and everything BUT mundane, then this book, with Bianca's beautiful testimony, is the one thing you cannot afford to pass up, put down or incomplete! Her story will move you to see your own story in light of the purpose for which God has created you. The story of the Israelites will motivate you and serve as a reminder to you not to give up on your promise at the very moment you stand on the edge of taking possession of it. As I stand at the verge of my own promise land, I am even more moved to step forward and claim it because the words of Bianca have given me power that I did not possess before. God has truly used her to empower others to walk through fire, stop wandering in the wilderness, and claim their Promise Land. And I am now one of those! I'm so grateful she wrote this book, and for whatever she had to go through to get its pages written down, I pray the Lord reward her greater for having accomplished His purpose.
I LOVED the book! It was such a compelling, quick page turner. It was nice to see how she related her personal struggles to the struggles of the characters of the Bible. The parallels were spot on and she really makes the Bible stories come to life. I found myself wanting to go and reread the Bible stories again. I really enjoyed Olthoff's writing style and her voice made it feel like you were reading a book authored by your good friend. She inspires you to want to surround yourself with a community of believers, to pray regularly and honestly and to be involved in ministry with the people at your church. The book encourages you to evaluate things in your own life and makes you want to implement real changes. I loved her message of the power of believing God was still mighty and powerful ready to help you through any situation you face. He desires that we cry out to him and is eager to hear from us. It was a great reminder of the personal nature of God and I loved her ties to biblical times and characters to reinforce the importance of the things she was saying. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone going through hard times, facing difficult circumstances or any friend that desires change. They'd all really enjoy Play with Fire!!
This is the first book from Bianca, and the first time I heard her name was when I picked up this book. From reading about her online, she's a popular speaker and teacher, with an Instagram following of 36K. The premise of the book is that God isn't waiting until you have more of anything (spouse, money, job, influence, etc) to use you. But more than that, she wants to remind us that God does indeed have plans for us. In her words, "He's whispering in the wind and speaking through the fire and shouting in silence the extraordinary dream He is birthing in you. His dream for you is far greater than the dream you have for yourself. It's not your identity or income or influence that will made this happen." I'm a tough critic on Christian living books (lately it feels like the market is over-saturated and there's only so much we can be doing to better ourselves, our walk with God, etc. - it's gotten a bit overwhelming). While I loved the concept of this book, I wasn't able to connect with Bianca's writing style. There was something missing in it for me, and as a reader I didn't feel the power of her words on paper. There's a large part of me that absolutely hates writing that because there's nothing more powerful than Christian women standing together to support one another. Maybe it was part of my mindset the day I read this book? Maybe I was nursing some kind of life cynicism or perhaps it was just as simple as my focus being "off" that day? After doing more research about who Bianca is in real life and the great work she's doing through the A21 campaign and Propel Women, I can see what a faith-filled woman she is. And from what I gather, she is a powerhouse speaker. Perhaps if I had known more about her or had seen her speak, picking up this book would've been a different experience.
Bianca Olthoff's debut book is an interesting one. I have to admit it wasn't my favorite book, but I didn't hate it either. It has a different style, both storytelling and Biblical teaching. Bianca parallels the mythological creature of the Phoenix to her own journey of faith, sharing how the beauty of reinvention through fire creates a opportunity for change. The back of the book states that Play with Fire will help women discover: The way out of the middle is moving forward The personal and powerful nature of the Holy Spirit The power and sacrifice of transformation The unique calling and purpose of life involves transformation If you're looking for a book that gives a different storytelling style, but also includes some great Biblical truths, this is a great one to check out!
