Largely overshadowed by The Shawshank Redemption, Thomas Newman's other Academy Award-nominated score from 1994, Little Women nevertheless remains one of the finest efforts of the composer's career, its unsentimental pastoral beauty vividly evoking Louisa May Alcott's indelible frontier world. Employing period instruments including piano, flute and strings, Little Women boasts a homespun charm that wonderfully complements Newman's warm, lilting melodies -- perhaps the most telling tribute one can pay this music is that the original compositions fit interchangeably with the soundtrack's public domain entries from Francis Johnson, Claudio Grafulla and Conrad Kocher, capturing the sound and spirit of early Americana to perfection.

I love the soundtrack almost as much as I love the movie! It's happy, sad, and just COOL! It fits perfectly whith the movie and the book. Highly reccamended.
This soundtrack is my all time favorite - it's great to have on in the background when you're hanging around the house, or when you feel like curling up with some tea and a good book. It's also appropriate music to have playing during dinner gatherings. It's beautiful, it reminds me of the terrific movie, and even after listening to it for the last four years, I never tire of it.
This soundtrack is absolutely wonderful! It has such a beautiful tone, and makes you feel dreamy, almost. You feel relaxed and calm, and this CD is definitely worth buying!
Thomas Newman has done it again. This soundtrack matches the aching beauty of the movie, as soft strings, oboe, and percussion weave the story together musically. I put this cd on to relax me, and it does the trick every time. If you like soft, incredibly beautiful music, you will love this soundtrack!!
The first time I heard this music (without watching the movie along with it) was a couples weeks ago on iTunes and my friend made me a CD of it and I was just blown away. I think I have cried eveytime I hear the theme. This music is soooooo gorgeous. Pure beauty. I love it.
