Over a period of 45 years and extensive research into life in Roman times, Taylor
Caldwell has created a very human portrait of St. Luke. Although it is a novel, it
is based on actual events in his life. You travel with him through his belief in
an "unknown God" as a child, his falling away and enmity toward God as a result of
tragic events, and finally his return to faith and his work as the writer of the Gospel
of Luke and the book of Acts.

Even knowing this is a historical fiction, the author researched the life of Luke and the times in which he lives so well, that I take much of what is written as true. So well written, I consistently pictured myself there with Lucanus. Reading of his visits with Tiberius, Pilot, and Herod was very interesting. I had never known the story of Luke's life. This book adds so much to my understanding of the times and of Luke's writing. I had to give it 5 stars because of the beautiful writing and the fascinating information.

Excellent! I have long been a fan of Taylor Caldwell and was not disappointed in her novel of St. Luke / Lucanus. Some descriptive parts become tedious ( at least to me), but do not take away from the magnifacance of her stories. Is she political, oh yes?!!, but with much to say and think about and realize that the world does not seem to change much but how simple it would be if we would all just do our best at our part.

If you have never read any of Taylor Caldwell's books, starting with this one would be optimal. A very enjoyable read and heartely recommend it for all interested in Biblical characters.

Portrays the life of Jesus from a Roman world vantage. It also illustrates God's design in sending Jesus to the world at the height of Roman power and world communication so that Christianity could be more quickly spread.
