Overview

On the grounds of Misselthwaite, her Uncle Archibald's estate near the Yorkshire moors, nine-year-old Mary Lennox finds a walled-in garden that has been locked securely for years. With the help of Dickon Sowerby, a young local boy who can charm animals, Mary cultivates the garden, an experiences that both improves her health and raises her spirits. Ultimately, the secret garden proves beneficial not only to to Mary, but to her sickly cousin Colin, whom her estranged uncle has locked away in solitude following the death of his beloved wife, Colin's mother. Nurtured with love and tenderness, the secret garden proves it has the power to heal the heart.

If you only read one book to your daughter (or son) let it be this one. The start is slow and the wording is difficult and sometimes the phrasing is awkward; so it is best for children at least nine years of age. So why do I so strongly recommend it? Because the attitudes and lessons of this book will set a child up for a happy and healthy life by sharing some bits of wisdom that are not inherently obvious (especially the influence one's attitudes can have on long-term health and happiness). It is a good story that is hard to put down . I suggest being extra expressive when reading the voices of the children especially during their arguments and battles of will.

This is one of many Leatherbound Classics that I have purchased and it like the others does not disappoint. Beautiful leather cover makes this classic tale even more appealing.

Amazing book!!!!! Not only is it gorgeous, but it also hold an absolutely stunning story. I loved it soo much. Another good book by Frances Hodgson Burnett is A Little Princess, which is also offered in the Barnes & Noble leatherbound collection. Both stories focus on amazing stories of girls in unique situations and who overcome their circumstances to become better people. I would recommend for anyone at any age.
